Family and Consumer Science Course Overview

1st 9 weeks
FCS-9 students will engage, once a week, in discussion and participate in an ARIN Program on Drugs, alcohol, tobacco, and violence. Students will complete a 9 week course in consumer math, decision making, and self esteem. For extra credit see www.jumpstart.org/realitycheck, select any link and prepare a summary if reality check quiz is not available.
2nd 9 weeks
Half of my students will begin the cooking program in this course. With a small amount of introduction to health, safety, and sanitation of the kitchen, students will embark on the excitement of cooking and the joy of sampling. We will prepare recipes in which we will microwave, cook, bake, and roast, and boil. (switch with third) http://www.copykat.com/ allrecipes.com
3rd 9 weeks
Half of my students will begin measuring and understanding textiles. Students will complete a 6 X 6 inch patch, demonstrating edge folding of 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 inch. After folding the opposite edges of their patch they will sew with running and back stick. Using measuring techniques students will find center and correctly attach a button. 4th 9 weeks
We've made it to the home stretch! Now we focus on child development, babysitting, first aid, communication skills, ( might I mention what a unique group you are) and lastly...students will create a handicap accessible bedroom inside a shoe box!
